The present report gives a survey of the work carried out under an arctic research programme financed by British Petroleum Ltd. during the period 1981-86. The composition and origin of the arctic air pollution has been examined and important areas of continued research are pointed out. In general, the Arctic has turned out to represent a key observation post for studies of the air pollution developments in the northern hemisphere.
