| dc.description.abstract | This report summarizes the different phases of a large cohort study on the short term health effects of air pollution in an industrialized area. The study estimated exposure of each individual on an hourly basis to SO2, NO2, CO, O3 I sulfates, nitrates, particles (fine fraction), using information obtained by a diary combined with geographic modelling of air pollution, continuous measurement at 9 stations, and measurements made indoors/outdoors in 15 homes. Health was assessed subjectively using a diary approach hour for hour and objectively with peak expiratory flow measurements four times daily plus complete measurements of lung function, blood and urine parameters every 14 days to 1 month. No changes were found in lung function (PEF) suggestive of an air pollution effect. Associations were found between subjectively reported symptoms of health effects and exposure to nitrates, ozone and possibly sulfate, NO2 and SO2. | |
